Anemia is a medical condition defined by low levels of hemoglobin. There are many different causes of anemia, but the most common one is iron deficiency. Extremely low levels of hemoglobin can be dangerous and life-threatening. If a patient is found to have severe anemia that requires blood transfusions, they will be referred to the emergency department.
